Assessment Appeals

RM of Wilton's 2024 Property Assessment Roll is closed for 2024.

Only properties that had changes to assessment will have received assessment notices in 2024.

A reassessment of all property classes is required by provincial legislation every four year so that property values are more up-to-date, accurate and fair. All property owners will receive their new 2025 Assessment Notice accompanied by an Appeal Form.

Every municipality is required to contract a Board of Revision to hear appeals. Every property owner has a right to appeal his or her property assessment. You can appeal the assessment of a property if you disagree with details relating to your assessment. SAMA is required to attend Board of Revision hearings to explain how the property value was determined. The board, upon hearing the appeal, will correct the assessment if an error has been made

Filing a Formal Appeal

To file a formal assessment appeal, complete the appeal form that was included with your Assessment Notice or download the Appeal Form. Include the appropriate filing fee (cash, cheque or credit card) by the deadline noted on your assessment notice. You can call in to the office 306-387-6244 to pay via Credit Card.

You must mail or deliver both your Notice of Appeal and appeal fee (outlined below) by the appeal deadline. Your appeal must be received no later than the 'Last Date of Appeal' found on your Notice of Assessment. Failure to submit the required fees and information by the deadline will result in your appeal being dismissed.

What Must be Included with the Notice of Appeal?

When you submit an appeal, you must:

identify the property under appeal (legal land description, civic address, roll number or alternate);
identify whether you wish to use the simplified or regular appeal process;
indicate what you are appealing, i.e., property valuation, property classification, exemption, preparation or content of the Assessment Roll, preparation or content of your Notice of Assessment;
clearly state the specific grounds on which it is alleged that an error exists;
in summary form, list the particular facts supporting each ground of appeal;
if known, set out the change to the assessment roll you are requesting;
indicate whether you have discussed the appeal with the assessor and the outcome of the discussion, including the details of any facts or issues agreed to. If you have not discussed the appeal with an assessor, indicate why no discussion was held;
provide a mailing address and telephone number where you can be reached;
sign and date your appeal;
enclose or call in your appeal fee.

Note: simply stating that the assessment is too high is not sufficient. If you feel that your assessment is too high you must provide evidence to the Board of Revision that your property is assessed incorrectly.

What are the Costs to File a Formal Appeal?

You must enclose a filing fee as follows:

Commercial, Industrial, Elevator, Railway, Pipeline:
Where the Fair Value Assessment is $499,000 or less	$200.00
Where the Fair Value Assessment is more than $499,000 and less than $1,000,000	$500.00
Where the Fair Value Assessment is $1,000,000 or more	$800.00

Payment can be made by cash, cheque, or credit card.

Most assessment-related concerns can be resolved by chatting with an assessor and/or SAMA before deciding to file a formal appeal with required fees. Due to COVID-19 protocols, in-person inquiries are by appointment only and masks are required.
If you choose to proceed and file a formal appeal with the Board of Revision your Notice of Appeal and the accompanying fee must be received before April 09th, 2024.
