How does Expropriation Work?
Expropriation is a legal process that allows the government to take ownership of private property for public use. The RM of Wilton uses expropriation for the expansion and construction of roads. When planning road upgrades the RM uses expropriation as a last resort, only proceeding after land owner negotiations have failed. The last time the RM of Wilton expropriated land was in 2015. North of TWP 480 was upgraded to accommodate heavy haul traffic to the Altex Facility. During this project the RM was unsuccessful in entering into an agreement to purchase right of way with one land owner. The RM used and has completed the expropriation process for this project.
